I only have a minute before I head out the door, but I wanted to drop by. I took a long warm bath last night and dropped some Aleve for my back, it helped. I know I need another day with a walk as my workout and I will probably be back on track.
I am headed to Ames, it's the LITE 104.1 Listener Lunch for the Community at Jack Trice Stadium. If you are in the area between 11 and 1, stop by. FREE lunch for the first 500 people from Quizno's with ice-cold Dr. Pepper. Plus, we have a tailgate theme rocking because we are at ISU - cheerleaders and all kinds of fun.
Have a great day!

Sometimes You Have to Admit Defeat
My back still hurts from kettle bells on Monday. My doctor informed me yesterday that I should try something less strenuous to strengthen my back and then try the workout again. She is a sage woman and I will be following her advice.
That's hard for me to do, even with the pain I am in. I don't like to go down in defeat. I like to crush through, take the pain and figure things out on the other side. That's why I worked out hard the last two days. Today however I realized I was probably elongating recovery, so I just went for a walk and I am going home to do laundry - which with our stairs is also a workout. ;)
I wanted to write this tonight to remind you all of something I have to remind myself of from time to time - pain sometimes means stop. I explained it to my mom the other day as, "There is push through and try a new move/weight for your body pain ('good pain') and then there is the look on your face now - bad pain." We all know what bad pain is - cut your hand, drop a bowling ball on your foot, get hit by a car - but we sometimes aren't paying enough attention during our workouts to recognize it.
I was playing tough girl on Monday, panting and wheezing and saying, "I'll be fine, give me a minute." I should have said then, what I am saying now - "My body has informed me that this is a BAD idea, I will stop now and give up a man card."
It's simple really, your mom has been saying it for years - "Do you want to do it just because everyone else is doing it?" Okay, usually that is a bridge, but you get the idea.

Kate

New Gym
I learned a lesson today, there is no direct way to get anywhere on the skywalk. :)
That being said, I joined Gym F/X today downtown. I am way excited. And I was way good on food today.
I got an extra workout today as I discovered that there are no direct routes on the skywalk. So what I thought would be a 15 minute walk became 30. It annoyed me and amused me simultaneously.
I also tried doing squats, that went o.k. But when I tried doing lunges, uh,no. My knee was not having it. I will have to have a trainer work with me on alternatives.
Anyway, I am really going to do this. I have even made a two year commitment to the gym to get a good deal.
I am working on a new food and workout plan. As soon as I have an hour to myself I will write it down and share.

When Do I Want to Get Honest?
I split the butt out of my cheap panty hose today. The liar in me is happy to stress the 'cheap' part. The honest person, that I know is hiding in there somewhere, knows damn well why the poor spandex infused nylon gave up - stress. Funny, I think the panty hose and I have something in common.
I have given up to stress as well. For months I have been eating and letting mental anguish beat me rather than fighting back. It has been easier to lay back, let insanity wash over me and cram it into my soul with cookies and a glass of milk.
When they put me on the 'sedentary' track for my knee, I was determined that wasn't going to lead me further astray. Alas, bullshit that isn't followed up with bravado is as useless as, well hell, I can't think of any clean examples. Suffice it to say, it won't get you very far.
I haven't been to my ortho since the whole, "we won't touch your knee until we know if the shoulder is cancer" episode. I could go back, but I have a sneaking suspicion what he will prescribe and my butt has been set on long enough.
Between my lack of movement and my ever present attempts at assuaging pain and stress through food, I have become everything I swore I would never be again. Now it's time to put up or shut up.
So, starting Sunday morning, I am going to put on my knee brace and walk. It won't be far or long, but it will be movement. I am going to see how far I can push my knee before it pushes back.
I don't have time to be complacent anymore. It is making me lack self-respect and not like myself, I thought that was over. But the self-loathing is now more painful than the knee, so one of them has to give.

It's a Beautiful Day
It is far too nice for me to do what I originally planned to do for a workout today. I was going to go hit the weights and swim. But for go's sake it's 75 and sunny on November 3rd! Outside is the only answer.
As I have been banned from running, I will not do that. Funny, I have never wanted to run so bad as recently, when I have been told 'no'.
Anyway, I have decided, despite also being told not to walk, that is how I will exercise today. I am headed outdoors in just a few minutes - I am being a rebel. (Insert evil laugh here - mwah, ha-ha)

Sweat
My car is having issues - AGAIN. So yesterday when I needed to get to a meeting of our entire radio group, I parked my car and ran. Luckily it's very low key because five minutes into my run the temperature went up five degrees and the humidity about 30%. By the time I arrived at the Botanical Center, I was soaked.
I toweled off as best I could in the bathroom. Sat through the meeting. Had a couple of crackers/cheese and some fruit at the social hour and then headed back out the door.
I intended to walk up to Grand Avenue and grab the trolley to 15th and then walk the last 10 minutes home. The trolley was nowhere to be seen, so I just started walking. About three blocks in I decided to say forget the trolley and just keep walking - goodness knows I need the exercise.
However, just as I had left the Bot Center the sun came up and half way through the walk the humidity nearly over ran me. The next thing you know, I am literally soaked. By the time I got home my workout clothes were sopping and my hair looked like I put it in a bucket of water.
And at the moment I was peeling my shirt off I had the same thought we all do - "Why can't you actually sweat your butt off?" Because I guarantee mine would have been pooled on the floor.

Cram it In
Thursday was quite a day. I am the news director for the Des Moines Radio Group. There was a complicated double murder and hostage situation. It was my job to get out on the scene and get the facts. Some (happily) ace reporting on my part got the straight story on the air before anyone else AND I didn't have to correct anything because I got it right the first time.
However the day unfurled with me standing on the scene for two and a half hours. Then it was off to a couple of meetings. Then I returned to go out to the State Fair to do an interview and found an e-mail telling me there was a press conference to wrap up the morning. At that moment I knew that working out was now unrealistic.
"Oh but wait, I can cram it in." And I did. I was at home, so I decided to walk the .8 miles to the station. Then I trollied to within three blocks of the police station and walked to the press conference. I covered the story and then walked the 1.5 miles back to the station. I used the time to listen back to the press briefing and pick out my quotes. So I multi-tasked my work and health. Damn, I'm good. (Anyone got a pin, my egos clogging up the room. ;) )
After I edited the sound bites, I walked home. In all about 3 miles. Not bad considering I wasn't going to get anything in yesterday. The only casualty was my nice shirt I was wearing. By the time I walked home I had pitted it out, but hey, that's what Tide is for.

Going Old School
Today I headed out of the front door of my office at 2 p.m. I had no real destination, just away from my office. I had my workout gear on and my mp3 player rockin'. The big question - would I walk or run?
I went for walk. In fact I went for a loooong walk. I hit the four mile mark when I realized I had forgotten an eye appointment. So I booked it for the appointment and walked in sweaty, but on time.
Afterward, I walked back to work. All in all nearly 6 miles of walking. I haven't done that in a loooong time. Very old school. Very 17 months ago. Very fun.
Tomorrow, I will finally tell you why I have a new short term goal with an honest to god deadline - September 27th.

Happy Independence Day!

(If you live in the U.S.A.) If you don't, perhaps you are celebrating another kind of independence, the kind I am celebrating today. I am becoming free of my self-destructive habits and I love it.
In fact, the last two days have shown some of the great dividends that losing weight can provide. I walked in the West Des Moines parade last night (4 miles) and the Urbandale parade this morning (2.25 miles). This is a particular victory as I have avoided doing parades for the past two years because I was too out of shape to walk them.
In the previous years before that - I averaged 10 a year, with my personal record being 17 in one summer and best 24 hours encompassing 4. This time I had a blast and walked/ran them with such ease I could have walked back to my car if I had needed to.
So, celebrate your freedom today, whether it's from fatty foods, your couch or tyranny, I am.
Best always, Ms_H

"I'm tired."
No one can whine like I can, at least internally. Publicly I put on an "I can do anything" face and plod on. But, behind the scenes, I constantly question myself. Tonight was one of those nights.
It was 7:15 p.m. and I was fresh from helping with a problem at work. It was time to finally cram in a brief workout before working some more and then finally getting to go home for dinner. I dressed and headed for the door, but in my head the whining began, "I'm tired", "It's been a long weekend", "You should take an easy walk, you've earned it". The voice is not Luci by the way, she is far more seductive with her ideas on how to stop my downward trend in weight, it usually involves food.
Well, I let the voice linger at the back of my brain and started walking. I was going about 3 miles and hour for the first couple of blocks and then I met up with this couple who was out walking. It seemed to bother them that they had to share the sidewalk, so I decided to speed up and pass them and give them their space.
But they sped up too. And then the competitive side of me kicked in. I threw on the burners and passed them (flew past really) and kept going. Inside the whiner was like, "Okay, you're half a block ahead, that's good, now slow down". LOL. No way, the adrenaline had officially kicked in.
I ended up doing 2 miles in 26 minutes. Sometimes I amuse myself.
But what I really learned is, I have to step out the door, no matter how I feel. My body will take care of the rest.

Running toward my goals
My day was redirected today when my step-mother called to say she had a migraine and could I keep Caelen tonight. Luckily for her the only must on my agenda was working out. Mind you I had no idea how I was going to cram that in with him along.
So I met my mom and step-dad for lunch with Caelen in a bit of a funk. Working out has become important to me mentally, as well as physically. (If you've been working out for a while, you know what I mean.) Well, they offer to take Caelen swimming that evening at the gym while I go upstairs and get in my workout.
It ended up working out well. We met them and Gordon and went on to the gym together. Mom and Bruce played with Caelen, who is becoming quite the swimmer for someone who isn't even 4.
Gordon and I went to the upper part of the gym with the machines and the track. I could tell that he really wanted me to run with him on the track, but something about that surface makes me a bit crazy. Though I did walk about a mile and a half on it, I got bored. So I headed for the treadmill, which I know is boring too, but I wanted a change.
I walked for a couple of minutes and then I did something I have been waiting for, I ran. Not just a block or two, but for 3/4 of a mile, non-stop, in 9 minutes. Then I cooled down with a walk and did a few leg machines, because I had already done my arms at home this morning.
I felt so empowered after the run. Now mind you, it was continuously flat terrain in air conditioning, so it was optimal. But I was impressed and damn it, that all that matters at the moment.

Just Keep Going
I blogged about my shin splint the other day. I was able to go find a support, as my friend mentioned. I have yet to wear it.
That is because I had a male moment last night, when I went to run with my brother. My shin was feeling pretty good, so I must not need it right? Yea right. Testosterone is a funny thing, it affects women the same way as men, we become invincible. LOL.
Well, it turned out o.k., because Gordon was understanding. We had walked/run a couple of miles and I asked if we could just slow to a walk. O.k., my walk is 4 miles an hour or better, which Gordon hates, but it's not as jarring as running.
Today it hurts, but it is getting better. As is my calf, which I just looked and I have not mentioned. I have no idea what I did, but Thursday I ended up with a cramp in my right calf and it was hard to walk. I took Friday off from working out, because it's my usual day off anyway and I stretched the calf and massaged it. By last night it was o.k. to run. It's still a little sore, but it could be worse.
And what is the lesson learned in all of this, just keep going. Now, I don't mean be unreasonable, but your body will make it clear if exercise is a problem. As for me, it's best to just keep going because otherwise my evil twin Luci will return with plans of how we can "just keep resting", so it will get better of course.
I have a great story about what else I found at the mall when I went to get my shin support, but I will share that later. All I will say for now is, "Damn".

Shin Splints
Well, I have officially done it to myself. My left shin has a "shin splint", also know as the outer area of bone and muscle getting very cranky. It started on my Monday run/walk and tonight it really dug in. So, no more running until I get it to settle down.
I am hoping for some relief by Saturday or Gordon will think I am making excuses for not running with him. We will still walk, but frankly that will not satisfy him.
I Googled the condition and found a new stretch for the front of my legs. I also found trainer recommendations for dealing with the pain, ice and ibuprofen. Neither one was a big shocker and both helped.
I will just walk hard the rest of the week and work my upper body. I refuse to give up a week of training to an injury I probably could have avoided by dropping another 20 pounds before I started running. Or maybe it's my running surface, all concrete.
Perhaps I should look harder at working out at Gray's Lake, I could be on the grass at the edge of the path then. Hmmm, something to consider. In the mean time I will follow the treatment options prescribed and look into the shin splint prevention strap a friend mentioned at work.

Sunday in the Park
Gray's Lake was re-imagined a few years ago. For some odd reason, I have not been there since this happened. That is despite the park being raved about as a wonderful oasis in the city in which to workout. This morning I remedied that.
The Hy-Vee Triathlon is happening next weekend at Gray's Lake and due to spring flooding the place needs sprucing up. So Parks and Rec is looking for volunteers to help clean and plant and mulch and more. I was one of those volunteers this morning. I got a nice, mostly upper body, workout lifting trays of plants and digging to plant them.
Then, when I needed to leave to go to my mom's for Sunday dinner, I walked back to my car rather than get the ride they kept insisting I take. I ended up sweating through about a mile and a quarter in no time flat. (Most of the sweating was due to the jeans I was wearing to be able to kneel for planting.)
What I learned is, people are right, it was a relatively peaceful place to workout. It's close to the airport, so on occasion there was an airplane taking off, but otherwise it was almost serene. I am going to get a trail map for distances and probably use the park once a week as a place to walk/run.

Saturday Night Training
You have to know I am dedicated to this exercise and weight loss thing. I am going to be meeting my brother, Gordon, on Saturday nights to train for that 5K we have agreed to do in October. So, instead of sitting my butt in a theatre chair and seeing a movie or a play, I will be walking/running my way through the East side of Des Moines.
And you know, I really don't mind. Not only will I get a chance to get out and sweat for the day, I will also get to spend time with my brother.
I see my youngest brother almost every day because I care for his son. But I only get to see Gordon once a week, because we both work so much. So, this will be a great chance to catch up. I am also hoping to take his severly overweight dog for a walk each week as well, man does poor Milo need it.
Remember people, our animals depend on us for not only food, but exercise. Sadly, obesity has become an epidemic for not only people, but pets. (I'll put my soapbox away now and tie on my rinning shoes.)

Remember people, our animals depend on us for not only food, but exercise. Sadly, obesity has become an epidemic for not only people, but pets. (I'll put my soapbox away now and tie on my rinning shoes.)

Walking Club
I have started a Walking Club at work. Our first walk was Monday and it was just me and one other guy. But today it was me, him and another guy. I have several promises of people joining up this next Monday. We are doing it on Mondays and Thursdays because that is what fits my schedule.
We are walking at 5:30 in the evening, which gives everyone a chance to clear their desks, change and meet in the lobby. I am hoping my obvious weight loss, coupled with other people joining, will create motivation for others to join.
I walk/run before or after the walks with everyone else, because I do not expect anyone to be at my pace straight out of the gate. Then we walk as a group for 30 minutes. That's for the moment, 15 out, 15 back. This not only lessens the chance that anyone will fall off, it shows them that you can fit exercise into your life without it owning you.
I am using this as an outlet for my urge to help others get healthier, it's fun. It also feeds my need to take care of the world. Someday I will win the lottery and be able to pay to help things happen. But for now I will simply try to help one out of shape Iowan at a time.

Hot Damn! - 179 & 13.5
Finally! I stepped on the scale this morning for my weekly weigh in and the needle gave me amazing news. After three weeks at 183, I have lost 4 pounds in the last week. That brings me to 179. It also pushes me past my short term goal of losing 2 of my nephew. He weighs about 40 pounds and I have now lost 81. This puts me just 44 pounds from my original stated weight loss goal. And frankly I am proud.
As for 13.5 that would be my overall per mile pace during my walk/run today. I did 3 miles in 40 minutes. About a third of it was running. Again, I am quite proud. I am training for that 5K later this year and just getting started with running. I was hoping, by the race in October, to be running a 12 minute mile. But this gives me great thoughts of doing even better.
I am on a high tonight.

Me and "the Girls" and this and that
I gave jogging a try the other night during my walk. It felt fine, my knees took the pounding well and everything, no soreness the next day. I really like the idea that I have come that far. Not that long ago, I couldn't have made it half a block. Saturday I ran a total of about 1/2 mile.
The breaker though was "the girls" they nearly knocked me unconscious. Refer to the girls however you will - nunga-nungas, bosoms, bazooms, tits or even dare I say, their proper name - Breasts. But I have to tell you, 38DD girls not properly restrained can beat you nearly to death.
So, further exploits in the world of running have been put on hold until this weekend when I get paid and can afford the right bondage. I seriously looked stupid out there bouncing around, my shirt even came flying up because everything was out of whack. Now, I do not usually care what people think of me on the street when I am working out, but I finally stopped running when even I became uncomfortable with the visual.
Oh well.
Yesterday I only had 30 minutes to cram in a walk, so I walked out the door vowing to make it to the Civic Center and back from work. That means I hit it hard, I even had a little strained look on my face ala Gerard Butler. I was able to walk the 1.8 miles in 28 minutes. That worked out to 15.5 minutes a mile. I was damn proud.
Getting ready to head out in a few minutes to put in a long walk. The route is a favorite, I go from home to Blockbuster to work to the library to the market and then home. It totals just over 4 miles. I am looking forward to it. However, I just stubbed my toe coming to the computer to blog; yes, I cursed, the nephew is gone. That's when Luci (remember the devil inside?) informed me that I should stay home and nurse it and of course, eat a cupcake to dull the pain. It's still twinging, but I am leaving the keyboard and going straight to change into workout togs.
By the way, finally took the time today to create a new workout playlist on my Zen, it's all Bon Jovi. :) Both "the girls" and I are very found of their bpm.

Walk the Walk
Today I followed through on a promise I made myself some time ago. I swore that if it were nice, I had the time and there were daylight, I would walk to work from now on. I live a swift 15 minute walk away, (18 on the way back because of the serious hills) so there is no good excuse for using the car.
This was also going to be my only chance for cardio today. Much to my annoyance I sat and watched it rain as the afternoon drug on. I haven't made a commitment to rain gear yet, because I have just started walking outside. The rain turned to a drizzle and the temperature dropped below 60 as my nephew was picked up for the day and I stared out the window again.
Every good reason not to follow through pounded in my head: I will get soaked; these are brand new workout shoes; I can't work wet, I will catch a cold; if I have a bad experience this time, I won't want to do it again; I don't want to. All right, the last one isn't a good excuse, but it went though my head.
Then my roomie came home, I dawdled, talked to her, got dressed in my workout clothes and looked out the window again. The drizzle had lightened and my resolve was strengthened, it was time to suck it up. So I did. I grabbed an umbrella, in case of downpour and hit the streets. Though not before culling a promise from the roomie that if it was pouring too hard when I was ready to come back, she would come get me. (She's astoundingly patient.)
Now I am ready to do it all the time. It was fun and empowering. People looked at me a little strange, because though downtown is being rebuilt and is increasingly residential, residents still don't power walk in drizzle. But I did by god and I loved it. And I am glad I stopped listening to the wuss that resides in the old part of my brain.
I also used my new step-on tension band today. It was good, but I am going to have to research more exercises online, because the ones that came with will get old quick.
