This is not what I normally blog about, but I love this story. It's a good example of the power of a woman.
Heather Bell was in labor with her fourth child on New Year's Eve, so she and her boyfriend headed for the hospital. The contractions were 7 minutes apart, so they would be there just in time. But the baby had other ideas. One huge contraction later and Heather knew he was coming.
She pushed and he came right out. Heather caught him in her hands in the front seat of the truck as it whizzed down the highway. She wiped his little face and he started crying. A few minutes later they met paramedics outside of Story County Medical Center. Mother and baby received initial treatment and then took an ambulance ride to Mary Greeley where they are both doing just fine.
The baby is Nico Dodge, he had a different middle name until he was born in the family pick-up. He weighs in at 5 pounds, 1 ounce and is expected to be released soon. See the full story here.
And that's the power of a woman. Heather didn't panic, she just dealt with what life was giving her. In the end, delivering her own baby - pretty impressive way to start the New Year.

2011 is Here - Let's Talk
It's a new year, thank goodness. 2010 was a year of health issues for me and I am praying 2011 will be health-drama free. Especially because I have plans for a better and brighter year. I plan to follow through on long dormant projects and work harder to become a healthier me as well.
I am sure you have similar plans. So here is my reminder to you - we are in this together. I am not some woman on a blog-island, I am out there every day trying to get it done, just like you and would love to hear from you. I want to know your goals, your successes, your failures and how you pick up again and keep going.
Communicating these things can be a great help for a couple of reasons - it gets it off your chest, so you can move on AND when you put it in writing, you have a better understanding of what happened. Therefore, I highly encourage you to share this year.
Here's to a great New Year!
Yours in Health,
Kate

Lucky Foods for New Year's Day
I am currently (for the 6th year in a row) working on New Year's Eve. I am running the controls for STAR 102.5's Downtown Countdown. No complaints, it's a complement to be entrusted with a 6 hour, live party show. (Or at least that what our old program director Jim said.)
While I am punching button I thought, 'Hey, this really gives me time to hunt down the info for tonight's blog'. It did. One search of Google and I found that Epicurious has already done a fantastic job with "Lucky Foods for New Year's Day". In fact, for years I have searched out something this thorough.
It covers foods and dishes considered lucky from around the world AND offers some of the recipes. I am really impressed and rather than recreating I thought I would give them props and share theirs. I brought over their picture as well. :)
So, here's hoping your 2011 starts lucky and stays that way.

Kate

Healthy New Year's Eve Drinks
I like to call New Year's Eve, "amateur night". It's that time when everyone thinks you should drink in celebration. Maybe you are looking to rid yourself of the memories of 2010 or you want to get 2011 started with a bang. That's great, do whatever floats your boat - but don't drink and drive.
Now here's the dose of reality you didn't ask for - alcohol has calories. (It's one saving grace is NO fat.) Yes I know, you know, but do you know how many? I bring you this handy calculator that the government has set up to discourage college binge drinking. While I don't believe you have plans to get completely faced, you should still be aware, alcohol calories add up.
A couple of examples -
Drink Ounces Calories
Light Beer 12 110
Martini 3.5 140
Manhattan 3.5 164
Margarita 4 168
Champagne 4 84
Red Wine 4 80
I am laughing at those a bit, because other than the serving size and calories on the wine, the Manhattan and the champagne, these are likely inaccurate compared to what people may imbibe tomorrow night. Beer is frequently 16 ounces now; that's a straight vodka martini, it doesn't account for juices or chocolate (my fave); and if you ever got a 4 ounce margarita, you would probably send it back as too skimpy.
With all of that said, there is nothing wrong with having a couple of drinks on an occasion. If all else fails, it's a social lubricant so you can put up with your cousin Gary who decided to tag along. The key really, like any other food, is moderation. (Are you sick of being told that yet?)
I have rounded up a few drink recipes to add to your festivities. If you drain the alcohol from them, most are kid friendly and all will be lower in calories.

Mojito Fresco
Poinsettia Mimosas
Golden Sparklers
Champagne Ginger Cocktail
Cava Cocktail
And this is a whole website of "Mocktails", so you don't have to worry about taking out the alcohol.
Just some ideas to mix things up for you. My best advice is, when watching calories, this is not the time to try something new or do shots (which average 100 calories a piece). This is a time to go with a favorite that you can savor and really enjoy, making every little drop count.
Tomorrow: New Year's Day recipes to bring you luck.

Healthy New Year's Eve Munchies
Here we are again, holiday food. And here I remind you again, that 'healthy' is relative when it comes to anything labeled holiday. With that said and my assuring you that one glass of bubbly, to toast the New Year, will not lay waste to your waist, I have come to share some snack recipes.
These are the little goodies that are placed on warming trays, in dishes, on platters, and even though healthier, will add up if you overindulge. So, remember key things like - fill up on the veggie tray (without the dip), drink a glass of water once an hour to fill tummy space and choose one thing to really enjoy or you may run off the rails without intending to.
Since I am going to give you several, they will be in list and link form:
Mini Corn Bread Crab Cakes with Lemon-Caper Sauce
Spinach-&-Brie-Topped Artichoke Hearts
Tyler Florence's Bacon Wrapped Shrimp
5-Minute Guacamole Recipe
Black Bean Dip
Turkey Cocktail Meatballs
Alton Brown's Mulled Wine
Ginger-Shrimp Pot Stickers with Spicy Peanut Dipping Sauce

New Year's Resolutions (Better late than, well nevermind..)
Be it resolved, I Kate Garner will attempt the following personal feats in 2008:
Continue my healthy lifestyle: Eat right. Exercise. Sounds basic, but a continuing resolution is important. I have lost weight before (not this much) and gained it back and it brought friends. While I have no intention of EVER going back, putting it in writing makes me accountable.
Tone and lean my body: Find the final excess fat on my body and "terminate" it. Add on lean muscle. Sculpt my butt and thighs. Solidify the athletic build I have wanted since long before I ever started this.
Find a way through the excess skin: I do not have nearly the problem that people who have gastric bypass surgery have. They lose their weight so fast, the skin can't keep up at all. Mine has to quite an extent, because I lost my weight naturally and a pound or two a week. But or should I say butt, my behind has sags, as do my belly, thighs and hips. The biggest problem is my belly. I would be two pants sizes smaller, if the extra skin wasn't there. I am doing research, but if anyone knows a magical cream to shrink it, let me know.
Be me: The last six months I have had several people imply I have changed. They don't mean my weight, they mean my fundamental personality. I have discussed this with several of my close friends, especially the person who sees me most - Lori. While I have become more confident in the way I look, I have not had some great persona make-over. In fact, as Lori pointed out - if there had been a major change for the negative, she'd be the first to notice and she'd let me know I should knock it off. In a post sometime this week, I will explain why we believe this is the case. In the mean time, I vow to be my same sassy, sometimes pain in the butt (though I try to do it with humor), upbeat and fun self.
Spend more time with Caelen: My 4 year old nephew is the light of my life. For three years of his life, he was the center of mine. Since August a lot has changed. He has a new step-mom, goes to pre-school and daycare full-time and I have a job outside of my home. All of that added up to it being all too easy for me to ignore my true love. No more, my sweetie and I will be going on many dates this year. Yesterday it was the Playhouse and ice cream (o.k., gelato at Stam's). Next week, it's a sleepover. Until he goes to kindergarten this fall, I am going to do my best to make this a weekly thing. Though I will be reasonable, he's quite in demand. ;)
Be more involved: My mom will be disheartened by that resolution. She was just telling me the other day that I do too much. I don't feel like I do enough or give enough. This year I will pick two charities to concentrate on and then give my remaining time as available and needed. It's just as important to feed my soul as my body.
Read more and learn more: I do not take time to sit down with books anymore. That is sad for my mental health. While I know I learn something new everyday, I am the news director, I do not get much of a chance to go behind the headline or follow a subject past a feature. This year I will do my best to correct that.
Get better at my job: I sometimes come off as a know-it-all and have a 'been there, done that' attitude. While I certainly need to work on that for interpersonal reasons, I need to reduce use of that egocentric crap at work as well. Beyond that, I need to work on my time management and writing skills.
Find excuses to be outdoors, preferably involving fitness: Lori and I have threatened to take up hiking, bike bikes and I want inline skates. I vow that one of those things WILL happen. Other possible follow through options include ice skating with Caelen and snowboarding with Annette - I like both ideas.
Travel more in Iowa and get to know my state: I can tell you our major towns and cities and probably how to get there. I may even be able to make a couple of recommendations for when you arrive. But the in between, nope, don't know much. So this year I want to take mini weekend outings and remedy that.
Use real note cards and fewer e-cards: I love getting "good" mail, I know others do too. Besides, we need to keep our hard working friends in the postal services employed.
Dang. Just looked back over that. I am going to be a busy bunny. :) Just like I like it.

New Year's Day
I have been so busy today that I haven't been able to blog. I have resolutions I want to share, but they will have to wait, because I am going to bed.
One that I am already following: Keep my healthy lifestyle on track - I worked out at Fitness World West (thank you for being open!) and I ate the right way.
By the way, everyone else worked out at the gym today as well. I hope everyone takes it easy and slides back into (or for the first time) their workouts. Over doing it will kill any urge you might have to follow through long term.

Keep on rollin' through ick-ville
I ended up taking Friday off from the gym because when I woke up my throat was raw and I was quite achy. However, I slept for nearly ten hours Friday into Saturday (a record in recent history) and the sore throat was gone, but the achiness remained. That did not stop me however, I went and hit it at the gym. I came away feeling pretty great for a sick person. Please note, if I were running a fever (a.k.a. potentially contagious) I would not have gone, because that is just plain wrong. Also, ick or not, I ALWAYS wipe machines when I am done, because anything else would be rude, oh and dirty.
Trainer Traci is awesome for many reasons, but one of the wonderful things she does for me is write up workouts for when she is gone. You see we normally workout Monday-Wednesday-Friday, but she is gone until Wednesday. That means Friday and tomorrow I am without her, so she knocked routines for me. Since I didn't go on Friday, I did that workout yesterday. Today I will do my own thing and then tomorrow it's another Traci workout.
Yes, I am working out on New Year's Eve Day and New Year's Day too. Not doing it would start the New Year off all wrong for me, so I am going to make the most of the fact that Fitness World West will be open. By the way, if you have resolved to get healthy in the New Year, this would be a great time to stop by, they have a joining special. Let them know I told you. :)
Well, speaking of the gym, if I am going to make it and then get to my mother's for dinner, I better roll.
