This and That and the Other Thing

The last 48 hours have been a blur.

Work has been crazy, but we put the next edition of Intuition Magazine to bed this afternoon, so that was huge.  Really like this issue, it's fun, very holiday.  The cover is beautiful, which has everything to do with our model Lindsey, great photography by Paige and design by Jolene.

One of my bosses and dear friends is leaving, we had her going away breakfast this morning.  I ate too many eggs AND had hash-browns - I know, I let my emotions eat for me.

Yesterday, I had a strenuous workout with Gwyn at the YMCA Healthy Living Center.  Tomorrow I am going to find a video of the torture exercise she likes to have me do, um, it's hard.  Whine. But I also know my abs greatly benefit, so I am torn. ;)  The day before that it was a water workout.  Those are really hard, but I love them.  I have even taken to doing an almost identical one at least once over every weekend.  I am seeing nice results.

Today, no workout, but then Thursday has become my day off.  Tomorrow it's back in the pool or maybe upstairs with weights because I missed Monday.  (No voice.)

I just finished writing a press release for a special concert that will be announced tomorrow morning.  That's all I can tease, but I promise details over the weekend.

Okay, that was enough rambling for three people, so I am going to wrap up and finally go home.  Good night.

Kate

Trying Not to Fall Off a Mountain of Brownies

Birthday week is over.  All the treats that needed to be had, have been had.  I decided as I landed back at my office yesterday that I would once again be leaving sugar behind.  It is still making me a bit queasy anyway, but somehow I was able to put it aside while celebrating.

Yesterday morning though, I faced my first mountain - a pile of brownies almost a foot tall.  Brownies - my ultimate weakness.

I made the corner to grab a cup of coffee in the break room and there they were.  They looked perfect - deep dark chocolate with the crackled tops and chewy tendency.  OMG.

But instead of caving to my lesser instincts, I grabbed my mug and walked away, knowing full well that within minutes they would be grabbed up by people without the same issues I harbor.  Or at least without a goal to be healthier.

So, yea for me!  And on to the food challenges I will undoubtedly need to face today.

Did you miss me?

Holy cow!  Didn't realize it had been so long since I blogged.  Sorry about that.  I didn't even remember to post last week that I was on vacation.

Time has been slipping away from me.  but now that I am back at work every day, little reminders will pop up to remind me to do this.

Vacation wasn't very vactioney. (Totally not a word.)  I ended up back at work a handful of times or helping other people with their problems.  But that's as much my problem as those that asked.  In fact, that is ultimately my overall problem - I am bad at saying 'no' to others and 'yes' to myself.

The highlight health wise last week was my commitment to working out.  I only missed one day!  That was great.  I either worked out with Gwyn or swam.

Food wise, it was my birthday week.  So, I was pretty good most days.  Had pizza on my birthday, a drink the next day, the cheesecake I had really wanted for my birthday on Friday and Sunday dinner at my mom's - and you know that meant cake. ;)  But overall, I didn't go totally - "I will be a good girl when I get back to work," which is HUGE growth.  I actually ate fruit and vegetables, lean protein and whole grains most of the time.

So, now I am getting back in the swing of things and there is tons to do, I better roll.

Kate

It's Birthday Season - Again

My family has four birthday seasons.  Ah, cake.  We have several birthday in March/April, July, August/September and December - that's a lot of cake.

Today we are celebrating my mom's birthday.  I don't know if there will be cake.  Part of me says, "yes, yum, caaaaake..." and then another part of me says, "um, no more sugar please."  Sugar and I haven't been hanging as much lately and when we have, it doesn't really agree with me.  It has been making my tummy ache.  In fact, since the prednisone incident, all food has been a bit of a problem.  Which has a good side - I am eating less.

But back to birthday season...  cake is like anything else in life, anything in moderation (except lard).  Have you noticed though that cake isn't alone in the birthday celebration?  There is usually a meal and, because it's a special occasion, fat must be o.k.  And naturally, more than one group wants to help celebrate this special day, so there's more than one of these eating rituals.

Therefore it's time to dance.  Tripping along the fine line between being festive and being gluttonous.  If you have any good tips on treading lightly, please share, I know EVERYONE, wants to learn a new trick applicable to this holiday and all of the others.

Kate

State Fair Friday Report

First, let me say I got a surprise today when I called my mom and she was at the State Fair with my nephew Caelen.  I love him so much and he was having the kind of fun we should all have.  He was eating ostrich sausage and looking forward to seeing the big steer.  He will be 7 in less than a month and everything is interesting at that age!

Me?  I went to the State Fair yesterday afternoon to work the Komen on the Go booth for LITE 104.1.  It was really fun meeting people and helping educate them about breast cancer.  The lady from Komen national paid me the nicest compliment, she loved the way I worked the crowd and thought maybe I worked for the local affiliate.  That's my specialty, I assimilate information, it's like I am the Borg.  :)

As for the food - the downfall of all fair goers?  I did really well.  I had my turkey tenderloin sandwich from the Iowa Turkey Federation grill.  It was so good!  I mean I am sitting here not thinking about it.  It was moist and flavorful and one of the healthiest things you can eat at the fair!  I also had a little fried rice, two crab rangoon and took some kettle corn home to snack later.

Overall, I think that's not bad.  I was mainly intrigued by the fact that I wasn't even tempted by fried things on a stick or deep fried vegetables.  Although, to be honest, it may have been because I didn't have my partner in crime with me.  When Lori and I go this coming Friday, it may be different.

Well, I better go, I have to go find the items that will be featured on the cover of the next !ntuition Magazine and I have no idea what it is yet.  LOL.

A New Coat of Paint & The Weekend

First, how do you like the new look of the blog?  I am gleeful!  Blogger has introduced a new tool to help create templates that are beautiful, not generic, I love it.  The new look is a much better reflection of what "Get Healthy with Kate Garner" is all about.  And now on to just that...

Friday, as I mentioned, I took the day off.  I slept in, I ate a late breakfast, I did some housework, I took a nap, I did even more housework, I had a friend over for drinks, I went to dinner with my brother and I landed back at home to relax.  It was a busy, except for the naps, fruitful day.  I kept my food relatively under control and only had one drink with my friend.

My workout on Friday was a combination of housework, stair climbing and lifting weights.  I was surprised by how trying to move quickly throughout the house actually kept my heart rate up.  By the time I hit the shower for my friend's visit I was sweaty, tired and satisfied I had worked out.

Saturday I woke up with a migraine as the storm rolled in.  I was convinced the lights flashing were in my  head until I was finally able to focus on the distant clouds, LOL.  So, I dropped four ibuprofen and snuggled back in the sheets.  When I woke up three hours later the headache was all but gone, thankfully.  Then I did a healthy breakfast, worked out with weights and dancing, went to work, ran an errand, got my hair trimmed and went to see the A-Team with my dad.  It was a fun popcorn movie, so that's what I ate - it also acted as my lunch.  Not a great choice, but I didn't add M&M's, so that must count for something.   :)

Then I checked my e-mail via phone and my day went off the rails.  I got an e-mail from a friend telling me that someone I once cared for deeply was getting married.  She even included a link to their wedding planning site - I am not a complete masochist, so I didn't look.  But the very idea hit me hard anyway.  I mean, I haven't seem him in almost two years.  I knew he would end up marrying this woman.  I don't have overt feelings for him anymore and yet, there was that pang.

I know there were a couple of factors at play - 1. 'There goes another person getting married before me' and 2. The standing self-worth issue of 'why am I alone'.  Rather than suffer with the memories and pain they brought up, I ate.  That's what emotional eaters do.  Rather than feel the pain or anger or frustration, we eat.  I went straight to a favorite barbecue joint, got my favorite sandwich, sweet potato fries and went home to stuff it down.

I made myself sick.  I never eat that much in one sitting anymore and I knew I was going to feel like I needed to puke when I got done.  So, I stuffed it down faster than my body could register the load.  A few minutes after I finished, my body bloated and I was miserable.  Not only physically miserable, but emotionally miserable.  I was angry with myself for once again letting someone else's actions make me self-destructive.  Rather than go for a walk or play another game of my favorite food distraction (Bejeweled) I fell back to my old friend food.  It was pathetic.

And there it is, the last of beating myself up for faltering with food and emotions.  I have to let this incident go.  If I continue to harp on myself or drag this out, it will only cause more binging.  My self-flagellation will only encourage me to get depressed and thereby eat ice cream to assuage those feelings - the circle would just keep spinning.

Instead, it's Sunday and I begin again with more knowledge about myself than I had yesterday and that is what I need most.  I need to recognize the problem, deal with it and move forward, not look back.  So, today I have had my oatmeal and coffee and now I am craving a salad for lunch.  I think it's my body asking for a detente, I will oblige.  In fact, the remainder of the day only holds healthy options as I work my way to a funeral and then on to doing laundry and then to a new week.

Yours in Health,
Kate

Thursday - Friday

I am actually taking a personal day tomorrow.  I have not had a day off in weeks and my mind and body are telling me this must happen, so I will listen.  That meant today I was trying to work ahead and I am just getting to leave work, so there was no workout today.

I would go do it now, but I have to pick-up a prescription and then go to my friend Chris's Mom's funeral.  By the time I finish with that the day will be gone.

But the good thing is tomorrow I will have time for me and get in a really solid workout.  I will also have time to relax and not stress eat.  The last two days have been bad.  Yesterday I was able to distract myself.  Today the animosity in the building built up to the point I ate a donut and three slices of thin crust pizza. It was ugly.  But all I can really do is forgive myself, learn from it and practice or find new coping methods.

Anyway I better go get my errand done before the funeral.

Kate

Mosquito Bites Suck

My literal button must be stuck on, because the title is exact.  But man, I am itching fiercely.  I have put on two different creams and there has been little relief.  Some of that may have come from sitting at a desk for three hours writing.  When writer's block hits you notice the itch.

This morning I started with some light exercises.  I thought by now I would have run errands and hit the gym, but struggling to finish the Outstanding Women web articles drug things out.  Now I am finally leaving to run errands.  So, I have a new plan - when I get home I will workout.  Even if it's something small, I will move my patootie. :)

I was so busy I forgot to eat anything, so now I am a bit sluggish.  I have to be better about that because a lot of times I will go straight from ravenously hungry to feeling ill when I do eat something.  I need to be a better body guardian.

Well, I better scoot, these errands won't run themselves.  Have a good day.

Okay, Grease Bad and Back on Track

Well, lesson learned - no more pure grease items going into my body, even if they are homemade.  I am feeling better today.  In fact, I had some bread and veggies last night and it helped settle things down.

Today, I am working as fast as I can.  I have to write all of the articles for LITE 104.1's Outstanding Women You Should Know.  I have crammed as much as possible into my morning.  Now I am headed off to physical therapy at the YMCA Healthy Living Center.  They have taken my therapy down to once a week unless I have a set back.

My food is back on track too.  Mainly because I am too busy to be 'bad'.  LOL.  No, seriously, I am just watching my food like I need to to feel well and energized.

I better get to therapy, so I am not late.

Working at LAZERfest - Packing my own food

I am just heading out the door to work at LAZERfest.  25,000 screaming fans can't be wrong. :)  Rain or shine, there I will be.

Like with any major event where I am likely to work 16 hours, I am taking my own food.  Fans aren't allowed to take in food, but luckily I am staff.  So, no fried food and beer for me.  I am bagging protein bars, oatmeal squares, apple slices, baby carrots and nuts and dried fruit.

There are two advantages - 1. I will not be off my healthy eating.  2. Eating this healthy will keep my energy up, even when I feel like I am running out of steam.

I'll be honest, I am taking a pillow and blanket just in case my body cries foul.  After my 'incident' earlier this week, I need not push it too far again.

Have a great day!

Kate

Struggling with Food

I had a grilled cheese and fries last night and popcorn with M&M's at the movies - it made me feel ill.  Yes, physically, but also mentally.

I was in a hurry after a remote broadcast and so, I stopped in at Stella's.  My only saving grace, once I had grease, the malt no longer sounded good.  Then it was popcorn and candy at Iron Man 2.

Both choices could have been avoided, but my old habits kicked in, because I am feeling mentally crappy.  I had somebody hurt me this week.  It made me angry and self-destructive.  Why do we do that?  I didn't do anything wrong.  I shouldn't be punished.  But that's exactly what I was doing in my attempt to feel better via food - punishing my body.

I am looking forward to my Intuitive Eating class Monday night at the Mercy Weight Loss and Nutrition Center.  I want to learn how to turn off that mindset of 'food=comfort'.  I know Dietitian Katie will lead me there.  I was skeptical after last week's class, but now I am ready to try anything.

Stress + Workout = Return of humor

It was a rough day.  From the moment I walked in the door I was on the go - put out a fire here, cover for somebody there.  I realized just a half hour before my physical therapy appointment, there was no way I could make it.  I called, apologized profusely and they were able to fit me in early tomorrow morning.  No complaints here though, I appreciate that they even found a slot.

At lunch time I wanted total junk and I said aloud, "What I really want is to call Sarpino's and land face first in a calzone."  My friend Mary responded, "But you won't."  My response, "No, I won't, I just had to say it.  I will sit here and crunch my carrots instead."  And it's true, sometimes you just have to say it, to be able to wipe it from your mind.

By the time 3 p.m. rolled around, I was crisp.  I wasn't being pleasant or easy-going, I needed a break.  So, despite being tired and cranky, I drove to the Mercy/YMCA Healthy Living Center and worked out.  In fact, I hit it hard in the water for an hour.  Afterward I was even more tired - but the stress was nearly washed away and that was the point.

I came back, prepped a shift, ran a meeting, did a bunch of other work and now am headed home with no need to squish a bug just to feel some kind of control.  Workouts make Kate much friendlier. ;)  We all know it works this way, but today was a good reminder.

Navigating a Life Change

I am still at work.  It has everything to do with the fact that this first week of getting into my groove at the Mercy/YMCA Healthy Living Center is taking a lot of my focus.  So, it has meant extra long days.  Poorly timed on my part because this is "hell week" as we work to close the next issue of Intuition Magazine.  But that's me - I want this change NOW, so to heck with normalcy, I will make it work!

I was once able to easily make everything fit.  It will come again with practice and exercise.  The latter may seem a little strange, but it's proven - both because it's an actual scientific fact and that's how it affected me before.  The more exercise I did, the more energy I had, the more my mind cleared and I could get things done in record time.  That's a side effect that isn't often discussed with regards to regular workouts, though it should be.

I have talked about my Swiss cheese memory before, I have felt scattered and focus has been nearly impossible at times.  In just the four days I have been hitting the gym and eating better, I have found my ability to clarify returning.  I feel like a fog has lifted, which became very clear this afternoon when I chatted with Nutritionist Katie after my workout.

Katie and I were talking over the basics of my nutritional plan - 1200 calories for non-exercise days, 1500 for workout days and how to make up those calories.  She started to go more in-depth with the good and bad, the pitfalls, portion sizes - all things I knew 18 months ago - and it all started coming back.  A few weeks ago I was very frustrated, I truly couldn't have told you how to eat healthy if it didn't come in a box with calories on the side.  When Katie started running through everything, it came rushing back.  I believe it was the benefit of both a clearer mind via exercise and a lesson that a little refresher never hurt anyone.

By the way, you will notice on the days I workout I eat more.  I know that in a day and age of everything right now that seems counter-intuitive.  "Wait, can't I just lose more weight those days by keeping my calories low?"  Well, probably, to a point.  However, then your body would start burning up things you really need, like muscle, to feed itself the difference.  Our bodies tend to freak when we diet and a major change in calories can actually cause it to go into starvation mode.  If that happens, your metabolism will actually slow down so your body doesn't need as many calories to survive, thereby keeping your weight the same.  Or, you could end up like I did in September 2007, flat on my back in an emergency room.

That's right, in the midst of my last weight loss adventure I went too far.  I didn't have anyone guiding me, like I do now, and that lead to doing exactly what I noted above.  I worked out seven days a week, but didn't take in enough calories to handle my body's basic needs.  So, one day I am getting ready to be on the air and bam!  I nearly pass out.  Long story short, after thinking it was just a sinus infection with a high fever, I became delirious and room mate Lori drug me to the emergency room.  My body was on its way to shutting down.  My potassium was so low I became delirious and they thought I had had a stroke.  Luckily a smart trauma doctor figured out what was really going on and three IVs later I was on my way home - very tired and very humbled.

That story will not repeat.  Not only because I have learned my lesson, but I have Team Kate to back me up with facts, figures and good old-fashioned common sense when it comes to how I should navigate the river of my journey this time.

Speaking of water, this morning at 6:30, I had my first water therapy appointment.  It was different, but I think I like it.  I know it didn't feel as hard, yet, as physical therapist Kara warned, I felt it later.   Oh well, that's what ice is for.

Good grief, it's after eight.  I better wrap up and go home for dinner and bed.  Have a good night.

Kate

I Don't Want a Cookie, Thank you.

I faced down temptation today - a sunny flower shaped cookie from one of the best bakeries in Des Moines - Highland Park Bakery.  Why are they so good?  Perhaps the mounds of creamy yellow butter?  Anyway, when my friend Chandler opened the famous white bag and offered me that sugary delight, I smiled and said, "No thank you, I am being good."  And amazingly, it wasn't that hard.

In fact, I haven't had a brownie, cookie, candy, anything of that ilk since Sunday.  But I haven't been missing it.  I have no idea why, other than I am ready for change.  I am ready for sweat, aches and fresh foods.  I am ready to be me again - energetic, smiling and determined.  So, that's exactly how I am taking this challenge on.  I may grunt, I may whine, but I will do it.  Trainer Gwyn experienced a bit of that today.

I met up with Gwyn at 1 p.m. at the Mercy/YMCA Healthy Living Center, it was our first training session together, after our initial meeting yesterday.  She immediately put me through my paces, which thrilled me.  I do not want to dance around, I want results.  Gwyn had me walk to warm up, then do this seated stair step machine called the NuStep.  Then it was on to working my shoulders until my arms felt like jelly.  Gwyn asked if it was the exercises that made me grimace and whine a little.  I assured her, no, it was just my body trying to remember the moves and getting a bit cranky.  We added in some balance moves and some stretching and called it good.  90-minutes of pure sweat.  Only thing I really need to do is remember to breath, I'm bad at that.

After training I bounced back here and found my food plan from Nutritionist Katie.  She had done exactly what I asked, she concentrated on calories and how they should be put together.  I will be meeting up with her for 5 minutes tomorrow after my workout for her to answer a couple of questions and give me a booklet that is a cheat sheet of foods that are the best options.

As far as food, so far I have been doing my own thing.  Trying to cut the fat and keep the calories at 1,400 or less.  Katie's plan will be a much scientific and help my body lose fat in the healthiest way possible.  It also will create better habits and long-term success.  Along time for now when I am ready for maintenance, I will have Katie revise the plan to account for my life going forward.

Well, I better go for now.  FYI - Tomorrow's plan - Water therapy with PT Kristi at 6:30 a.m., Workout at 1 p.m. (Gwyn is out but she will have someone else check in on me) and a brief meet-up with Katie to go over nutrition plan at 2:45.  Until then...

Kate

So, I'm Sitting at a Blues Club...

Okay, not in reality, just in my mind. I was emceeing an event tonight at Miss Kitty's for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I was writing this post in my head while tapping along to the amazing local blues gods Matt Woods & the Thunderbolts. Wow. They were amazing. They make my short list of future shows to see.

With regards to the real reason we are here... Today's Report:

I added two new members to Team Kate today. Physical Therapist Kristi and Personal Trainer Gwyn. Both, of course, are a part of my new home away from home, the Mercy/YMCA Healthy Living Center.

I met with Kristi first thing this morning. By the time we were done I had to compliment her, she's the first PT that has explained completely not only my exercises, but what they will accomplish. Plus, she was able to give me tips on how to modify things so they will work better. She also knocked out the front of a 4-6 week plan to get the knee rehabed and deal with my ongoing Achilles issues. It will include water therapy, which is new for me. I am looking forward to it.

The afternoon was my meet-up with Gwyn. She s a no-nonsense woman with a passion for what she does. She asked me questions that no trainer ever has, she really wanted to get a rounded picture of past, present and future. I look forward to her unique perspective and support.

And in the end that's what all the members of Team Kate are here for, support. Because they can make all the plans and give all of the advice in the world, but if I don't follow through, I won't win.

With that in mind, it was another good food day. Lots of fruits, veggies. whole grains and lean protein. Nutritionist Katie e-mailed to say that she is working on my food directions.

Anyway, I am well past tired. I stayed up late to let my food settle. I didn't get to eat until after the fundraiser. Good night.

Kate

Getting my Ya-Ya's Out

Going in to this weekend before my official start at the Mercy/YMCA Healthy Living Center, I had no intention of throwing caution to the wind and noshing endlessly - but I did.  It was a "Tour de Food" through Central Iowa.  Every time something was presented I was like, "Well, this is the last time I can do this for a while."

Admittedly that's not really true, I am a big believer that once you get your basics down about food - calories, nutritional composition and portion size - you can eat anything in moderation.  Which I did, each time I indulged. :)

Here's the full confession:

Friday night - Lori's Birthday dinner - Le Jardin for truffled chicken with savory mushroom bread pudding and for dessert apple bread pudding with creme and caramel.  Both were AMAZING and I recommend it to anyone wanting a splurge.

Saturday - Lunch at Hickory Park for Aunt Marla's birthday - Open face turkey sandwich with gravy and mashed potatoes and a scoop of coffee ice cream with hot fudge for dessert.  Saving grace?  The gravy and mashed potatoes were both salty, so I did not even come close to finishing.  The ice cream of course was just fine. ;)

Saturday night - Dinner was simple - a cup of potato leek soup from the Weight Watchers cookbook and 100 calories worth of pistachios.  However, then it was off to Gateway Market downtown for their third anniversary party - couple bites of cheese, several bites of bread, taste of ravioli and small piece of anniversary cake.  Oh and a couple of their amazing almond macaroons to take home and eat.

Sunday - Lunch at Bruegger's, did right thing and split chips with Lori.  However, then went next door and had homemade ice cream at Bauder's.  Somehow it just tastes better when you are sitting at an old fashioned soda counter - another recommendation.

Sunday dinner - I am getting ready to go down stairs for dinner now and have the chicken brat that also came home from Gateway last night and some veggies.

Wow.  That's a lot of food.  The best part of today, health wise, was three hours in the yard today, though I know I will be sore tomorrow.

And that's the best thing of all - tomorrow.  That is the day I officially begin again to begin again.  I will soon not get sore doing yard work or be in pain walking stairs.  I have a whole world reopening to me tomorrow that I have really missed.  I can't wait to reintroduce myself.

Kate

Guessing Game

My meeting today, about the thing I am not telling you yet, it went very well.  So well in fact I don't think I want to wait until May to tell you.  To alleviate the pressure, I am going to put this on you.  :)  Each day I am going to give you a picture clue and a tip.  The picture will be of some feature of the thing I am not telling yet.  The tip will be something I find useful in being a healthier person.

Use the pictures to try to put the puzzle together.  First person to guess the place and what I will be doing there wins a gift certificate, not sure for what yet, but I will let you know next week.

Now maybe you go to this place and it will spark right away.  Or maybe, like me, you didn't know this option existed and you will be as pumped as I am!

Here is your visual Clue #1:

Let the guessing begin.  :)  (No family, friends or co-workers allowed.)

Now for today's tip:

If you see 'sauteed' vegetables on the menu it really means 'soaked in butter and/or oil'.  Ask if the chef can prepare them with water or lemon juice instead.  I know it sounds crazy, but most good restaurants are about customer service and will do it.  You win three times over - fewer calories, less fat and no sinking greasy feeling in your stomach later.

Well, that's today.  It has been busy but successful.  Have a great night!

More Energy

I was bad this morning - I had an apple fritter.  Yes, about the worst of the donuts, was my snack during a meeting.  At least it had a fruit in it. {blush}  Embarrassing AND bad for me, lovely.

That being said, overall I have been eating much better.  The amount of vegetables and fruit I have been pushing into my diet are helping.  Plus, I am remembering to take my vitamins and iodine to help my thyroid.  In fact, I was in a really good mood yesterday, despite a bad night's sleep.  Today I am feeling pretty good as well.

I want to lose all the weight again.  But more than anything else, I want my energy and smile back.  I was so go-go and smiley people thought I was high.  Don't care, I was happy.  So, I am working to get my happy back - the butt is just a bonus.

Warmer Weather Makes Me Want Healthier Food

Does this happen to you?  It breaks 50 degrees and suddenly those apples, carrots and strawberries look good.  You find yourself craving asparagus, Lima beans and a ripe banana.  Oddly, this is me.

Once upon a time I craved these things every day, no matter the temperature.  But these days it takes a balmy 54 and a little sun to motivate me.  The good news in the whole this is that I am in the mood for that which is best for me.

So now I am craving even more sun, so I will want a salad.  :)

Girl Scout Cookies - Little Taunts from the Underworld

About eight weeks ago I ordered Girl Scout cookies from my friend Traci at work.  I wanted to be generous and thought I had plans for what I ordered - all NINE boxes of them.  What?

She delivered them on Friday and I was like, "What, in the hell, was I thinking?"

I seem to remember something about crust for a cheesecake and Thin Mints freezing well.  But beyond that, it was another food shopping blackout.  That happens more often than I would like to admit.  I'll walk through the store getting what I actually need, see something interesting (read: not good for me) and then when I get to the checkout, the naughty Luci in me (short for Lucifer), has put them in the cart.

Now sometimes I am good and hand them to the clerk saying I have changed my mind.  Far too often though, I go ahead and get it anyway.  Then I try to bring it to work and pawn the bulk of the stuff off on co-workers, probably sabotaging their healthy life changes.

Anyway, I can't ask the clerk to put back the Girl Scout cookies.  So, so far, I have passed off four boxes to other people as 'gifts'.  The others are sitting in a giant box by my desk whispering sweet naughtiness in my ear.  Some of the Peanut Butter Patties have already won a place in my stomach.

Though no worries to the little girls in green, I don't blame the Girl Scouts - I blame the cookies. ;)

Yours in health,
Kate
